Why monitoring is important?
All aspects of business rely on information, whether it be to make an important decision, prove compliance, or investigate a problem. To be of any worth, information must be based on reliable, accurate data. Gathering this data efficiently is therefore crucial to any enterprise. Many businesses rely on the environmental parameters of a process/project/product being stable and within set boundaries so collecting accurate temperature and humidity data can be vital The days of the person with a clip board reading from a thermometer or a chart recorder are long gone. This method was too prone to errors of inconsistency and of reading and transferring data. Electronic Environmental Monitors can be preset with sampling frequencies from 30 seconds to several hours. They can perform inside a freezer at -80C or inside an oven at +450C. They can be shipped across continents or placed on a shelf in a hospital ward and be relied upon to collect their data 24 hours per day and 7 days per week. The data is stored safely and can be transmitted over a wireless network or downloaded on request to a computer where it can be analysed. As well as storing data, the Environmental Monitor can also set an alarm if conditions transgress preset limits. This can be in the form of a simple LED to indicate there has been a problem which needs further investigation or an email or SMS message sent to a responsible person. Most industries or businesses have a requirement for some form of environmental monitoring. Whether it be checking that the temperature of a shipment of bananas has remained constant throughout it’s journey or proving that the temperature fluctuations in an IT server room are causing computer problems. Whether it be proving that the fridges and freezers in a hospital comply with MHRA regulations or investigating the changes at the centre of a compost heap. | ![]() |
